Looking Back
When I first heard about the personal essay and how we would have to write about a community that we were involved in, I was immediately stressed. I couldn’t think of a community I was a part of and one I could eventually end up writing a one thousand word essay. After some thought I decided to write about my pre health living-learning community that I am/will be a part of for my freshman year. Once I had an idea of what I wanted to write about I struggled yet again, as I couldn’t think of any genres to write about for my essay. Eventually I picked a couple of genres that related to the LLC class and simply had to incorporate the personal aspect of the essay. I sat down and wrote my first draft and worried about my essay sounding too dull and academic and not quite personal. Later on I met up with Mr.Wenzel where he confirmed my fear, my paper was too boring. After the conference I realized that I needed to focus my essay more about myself and how I relate to the genres, instead of merely focusing on explaining and describing the genres of my community. I had gotten so focused on writing academic papers and simply writing to inform that it was challenging to write about how I relate to my community. I used this feedback to write my second draft and am now waiting to go to the RWC in hopes of getting it revised another time before the essay due date.
